i'll not be engaging in any manfight with the likes of Charlie_Quintana.

i will say simply this: i've never experienced as much wit and humor anywhere on the internet as i did at the old dylanpool.

and i certainly don't intend that as a knock at this site or any other website.

it just happens that the old dylanpool represented a unique, rare and temporary gathering of some of the funniest and most knowledgeable dylan fans in the world.

i will indulge Charlie_Quintana this far and no farther.
i could spend a week naming things that the old dylanpool had that this site does not have and could never duplicate, but i will name only the first three that come to mind:

tom .
ask arlo
songanddanceman

so now i have answered your challenge, Charlie,
and i see no further point in discussing this matter with you
as you literally are approaching this subject from a position of abject ignorance.

yes, even marlon.

after one of his many bannings, he came back in the persona of a goody-two-shoes who kept sucking up to the moderators and complaining that he was being mistreated by the other poolers.

i'd also mention my good buddies, just_chris and hobo the j, and even nick manho.
and so many others that i really shouldn't even get started trying to name them.

and i'm glad to hear that tom . posts here.
at the old dylanpool, tom . consistently refused to acknowledge my existence,
which i thought was a damn funny tactic.

tom doesn't like to be outwitted. loved his gomez character.

do you remember (silly thing to say) the thread where garbologist aj weberman turned up unnanounced with his dylan book?

i seem to remember you engaged in a lengthy conversation with him.

i'll never forget the a.j. weberman thread.

i had a 55-page conversation with that guy, and i loved every minute of it.
even though i did not respect weberman's invasion of bob dylan's privacy back in the day,
i thought it was fascinating to hear from him in the present day.

yes, weberman was trying to sell a book,
but he was also interested in engaging us in a dialogue,
and he should not have been banned from the old dylanpool.

for chrissake, here was someone who actually knew bob dylan
and who had some genuine insight to offer.

most people assumed that weberman was banned for advertising his book,
but the reason was actually that he made one stray unfortunate remark about bob dylan's health,
for which he apologized, by the way,
and still he was banned summarily and without explanation.
he wasn't even sure whether or not he had been banned because no one gave him the courtesy of notifying him.

he went away scratching his head and wondering why he ever bothered to engage us.

was it the 'bob has aids' remark which he said bob hinted at in every song on love and theft?

yes, that was one of weberman's beliefs,
but i hasten to add that weberman is, in many way, a crackpot,
and i know of no facts whatsoever that support weberman's theory.

for his part, weberman relied solely on bob dylan's song lyrics to support what he was saying. he doesn't know anything about what bob is doing these days. he even told me that i was making up some of the alternate lyrics that bob was singing in concert. "it doesn't sound like bob," weberman said to me, to which i replied "it may not sound like bob to you, but i have a recording of it right here next to me."

anyway, the health thing is not something that should be dwelt upon so i'd prefer not to discuss it any further.
it was merely the musing of a semi-deluded person who had a financial inerest in trying to demonstrate that he had discovered the key to interpreting bob dylan's lyrics.

to me, it's just daft to think that every word that bob dylan puts in a song is a code word for something else.

i did make a copy of the image but i seem to have lost it in the mists of time.

in fact it is a great shame that arlo did not archive the pool files away somewhere. some of that stuff was gold dust.

i was thinking of the single greatest ever post has got to be blair's '1965 san francisco press conference'. a lot of people jumped on the bandwagon and claimed it was the best thread ever, but really it was just that initial amazing post followed by dozens of people congratulating him.

the best thread in my opinion was the 1966 tour. great times. anbd unlike some people i was enjoying it right up to the death (well maybe not the final two weeks).

i have many favorite threads as well.

many.

even recalling some of them now, i start to laugh.

there was one thread that asked: if a bob dylan show consisted of nothing more than bob dylan walking out onto the middle of the stage and eating a sandwich, would you pay money for a ticket and go to the show?

just before i saw bob for the first time in concert inm london in 1978 the bbc radio 4 aired an interview with weberman where he was playing songs backwards to find hidden messages.

one claim was about aliens, and if you listen to if dogs run free "oh winds that rush my tale to the so it may flow and be" you'll notice dylan deliberately slurrs the words. played backwards it reads "if mars invades us".

nutter.

so, Tim Out of Mod,
what sort of cool moderator powers have they given you?

are you able to monitor our PMs for national security purposes?

by posting here, have we consented to your searching our luggage?

and, most importantly of all, can you change someone's avatar to an image of a monkey playing a pair of those tiny cymbals?

I can't even begin to tell you about all the cool moderator powers. The best is that this site even exists and I can post here.

I don't believe that I am able to monitor your PMs. If somehow I do have that ability I have no idea how to do it and so I've never done that, nor would I wish to.

Posting here is in no way consensual to having your luggage searched. However, if you should find sneakers with no holes in them to wear to an upcoming Dylan concert, you are more than welcome to blame me for that.

We probably can change someone's avatar to a cymbal-playing monkey, but we've not resorted to that yet. Send us a PM if necessary.
